Lyrics

Sally was a princess She was living off the interest Of some fortunes that her Dad kept in a trust But Sally wanted more She’d seen the highways, and she swore She’d leave those Hudson River Crossings in her dust For where exactly Sally couldn’t say She hopped a ride with Tony in the early light of day Now Tony he was reckless Not the kind to stop for breakfast He took his coffee through a rolled up paper bill Did it early, did it often Did he end up in a coffin? Did he really think that Sally couldn’t tell? Did he really need that gun beneath the seat? Tony turned to Sally and he touched her on the cheek He said the Feds ain’t far behind me And if it’s come tomorrow they find me You can bet your ass they won’t be shootin’ blanks So let’s be good by one another We’ll use The Interstate for cover And we’ll ride until the there’s nothing in the tank There were motels, there were hostels There were Christian Pentecostals On the radio all up and down the dial But when The Interstate got quiet That’s when Tony didn’t buy it That’s when Sally couldn’t fake another mile She said Tony stop the car I’m getting out I’ve been thinking what my Dad would say if he could see me now And you know you kinda look like him, and looks might get you far But a thousand miles of drivin’ still ain’t changin’ where we are! So save it up for when you need it ‘Cause what we had can’t be repeated No they’ll make me say this wasn’t’ what it was And if the Interstate don’t fail me I’ll find my own way home so help me God I know this shouldn’t matter, but it does Sally up and thumbed her way back East Things were pretty quiet for a week or two at least Then she caught the news on channel nine Tony’s car was spotted near the Jackson County line They had him on the radar, man his whereabouts were known Sally shut the TV and she waited by the phone Tony called collect He didn’t mean no disrespect It was faster, though, than paper and a pen And from the last remaining payphone Tony laid it down, and drove it home While Sally listened on the other end He said Sally don’t believe a word they say Now I might have double-crossed a U.S. Marshall in my day And I might have cut him down if he was standin’ in my way But I never thought The Interstate would give me up like this ‘Cause now I’m scared I might get popped if I so much as stop to piss And those Feds have something coming if they think that I’d confess But I’d take the rap tomorrow If you’d just admit you miss me Sally! And while that might just be pretending I’d get to write another ending Aw they’re wrong about me Sally girl I swear! And if The Interstate don’t kill me Well then there’s something else that will Because hey we’ve all got it coming And if there’s one place left worth running Sally only you can tell me where
