Lyrics

When Peter was a little boy His mom and pop would jump for joy At the promise that was in store for their son A handsome kid with a beaming grin Twinkling eyes and a delicate chin And a brain to match the charm he had in spades A young doctor in residence A general or the president His parents knew he'd be an important man They put him into Sunday School Where he'd study God and learn the rules To set him on the straight and narrow path When Peter got a little older He read lots of books, his mind grew bolder Questioning everything under the sun It was always assumed, that after mass Peter would attend confirmation class Even though he didn't believe such things The stories were all fabricated From a book that seemed so antiquated And foreign from the things that he knew In the summer dad would tighten the reigns And even though he'd object in vain Would make him go to Christian Camp each year All the kids there shook their heads At the crazy thoughts inside Pete's head For questioning the beliefs they knew as fact They hated him and they called him names He hung his head and cried in shame For thinking that maybe he'd been wrong (musical break) When Peter was in class one day He signed up for the christmas play And wound up with the starring role to boot The play became a big success Pete's performance was hailed the best And from that day he knew what he would be But his mother then caught word of it And his father didn't take no shit They came up with a plan for their boy They shipped him off to military school Where he'd work real hard and learn the rules And finally become the man his parents dreamed Then one night he'd had enough He crawled out of bed while in the buff And walked on back to town where he lived Well his father responded terribly Beat him and threw him into therapy Where they put him on some drugs to right his brain After that something in him died His best friend saw and though he tried and tried Couldn't put old Pete back together again His parents sent him to medical school Where he'd study hard and learn the rules And finally become the man his parents dreamed But he dropped out of school and then instead Shot himself in the head And wound up on the 6 o'clock evening news They asked most people, and they agreed That he followed the program to a tee But couldn't make sense of his ambiguity Ask most people, and they'll agree That he followed the program to a tee But couldn't make sense of his ambiguity He couldn't make sense of the ambiguity
