Like Wale and Tabby Bonet, 21-year old 9 Milli aka Day Day is revolutionizing the way in which people perceive music from the mid-Atlantic. With his confident swagger and ‘young boy’ attitude, 9 Milli aka Day Day is rapidly emerging as the voice of the city’s youth- setting him apart from the rest.
“Nobody can be me because I'm me and my music is me. That is what sets me aside from other rappers. What sets me aside from DC rappers is that DC rappers tend to stay with one style, hardcore. I like to explore different arenas, but I love DC style.”
9 Milli aka Day Day, born Damon Sams is from a section of Southeast Washington DC known as Lench Mob. He was given the name 'The City's Young Boy' because of his strong messages about the perils of society and street life--all of this seen through the eyes of the District of Columbia’s largest and most plagued population, its youth.
“I’m real, not a fake,” states 9 Milli and he has the stories and gun wounds to prove it. Although he is aware that the ferocity associated with street life is nothing to brag about, he is thankful to be alive and have the opportunity to tell his story. Being in the midst of urban violence and experiencing the murder of his father was devastating, however instead of retaliating 9 Milli chose to focus on something that keeps him positive, his music.
Through his lyrics and community involvement 9 Milli wants to show the world the side of DC not shown on TV.
"There's no Bush Administration where I'm from, says 9 Milli. “Just real hood soldiers on their grind to get a better life."
9 Milli has spoken at peace conferences held by Mayor Adrian Fenty and has been featured in Newsweek, Washington Post, and The Informer. He has also starred in an Associated Press documentary about the Gun Band Law in DC. He has performed throughout the DC area and has completed a music video for his song 'VIP LINE' Directed by Jerome Hyde. He has also just completed his DVD called Real Recognize Real. -Andrea L.
