Mission Statement: To revolutionize the twin cities hip hop movement. As I see it... the biggest problem twin cities has within its hip hop community is distribution. There isn't a solid distribution network or marketing tools for a homegrown artist to take advantage of. Imagine if you will a series of mom and pop stores through out the twin cites marketing local talent and selling local artist cd's. Imagine a local artist being able to utilize local tv for promotional play of there music.. sort of like a 106 and park show airing weekly only on cable access though. In this hypothetical world newspapers like insight, city pages, the hmong times and etc.... would preview local artist and provide descriptive bios, release dates, interviews and public feedback of local artist. A local music magazine could be developed and maintained by hip hop enthusiasts from the twin cites or surround areas to increase public awareness of artists. Radio stations like kmoj, b96 and 93x could dedicate a 1 hour block daily to showcase local talent. Clubs like cream, envy, and 7 would make promotional deals to sponsor a popular local talent, not only boosting awareness of the artist but increasing there own club attendance in the process. In this hypothetical world a local record company and artist reasonably could sell 25,000 to 50,000 units in the twin cities and surrounding areas. At 10.00 a cd you do the math!!!!! Hip hop artist around the twin cites are waiting for def jam, sony or arista to come knocking on there door with a bullshit deal taking 95 percent out of an artist pocket for promotion, marketing and distribution cost. A major deal isnt as attractive as it looked in 98, with all the money being spent on marketing and promotion and etc, major labels our doing good if there artist moves 150,000 in this market now a days. As an artist you would see 75 cents to maybe a 1.19 in royalties for every cd sold. Dont get me wrong nice pay day but were is the rest of all you money going, as an artist that just bothers me.... they'll rape you if yo business aint right or even if is. The only advantage with a major is bigger exposure. Bottom line twin cities needs a independent market to move us to the next level. There isnt a strong enough buzz for our talent why... again no distribution or marketing network to take advantage of. I would rather move 50,000 units independently than 500,000 major... why: bigger payday and in the end we our here for the money right? Im suggesting taking a national marketing campaign like the major record companies use and shrink it down to our size to fit the twin cities. We could use are tools at our disposal to create a new music market that can generate business for artist, companies, clubs, stores and etc. Mix in internet sales, street sales and the sales from the twin cites experiment im proposing and this could become very profitable for everybody involved, even the mayor or governor(lol). The adverse affect would be majors breaking there necks to come sign a local act. Jay said it best... men lie, woman lie... numbers don't you do the math. I stand for challenging the status quo and when I leave this earth, I hope Im remembered for my unique presentation of my music, my business and my life ....Welcome to I AM Music...Independent Artist Movement Music.... Best Regards ..... Elliot Fernandez
