My name is Amber Lyricz, a native of Detroit, Michigan and my journey began at the age of 18 months. While resting in my playpen, I suddenly heard the Johnny Carson Show theme song and decided to make my get-a-way. I climbed over to listen, breaking my arm trying to find the source of the music. My love for music became very evident! I started playing the piano “by ear” at the age of 6, later playing the guitar. My first song was Fur Elise by Beethoven. And from then on I mimicked any song I heard. Fast forwarding to 2007, in high school, my first singing debut was at Grammy Night. I sang Beyonce’s version of ‘Wishing on a Star’ and got great feedback. My second time ever performing for an audience was in the summer of 2007. I acted as a grandmother in a local play called ‘Lil Red: The Remix’. I had to sing Oleta Adams version of ‘I Hope You Dance’ as encouragement to Lil Red (grand-daughter), who wanted to make it in the Alvin Ailey Dance Company. When it was time for Lil Red’s dance solo, I sang ‘Black Butterfly’ by Deniece Williams. The theater was so quiet; you could hear a pin drop. My performance was well received. The following day I was asked to perform Black Butterfly a cappella at COBO Hall for about 2,000 summer job participants and staff. It felt very exhilarating! Several months later, I was so inspired by the whole experience…I began writing my OWN songs. Writing came as naturally as singing. The most bitter-sweet incident that had a huge impact on my music career happened in February 2009. My great-grandmother became gravely ill (she passed away March 3, 2009). While she was having lab work done, I began to sing to her. A lab technician took notice and called a relative, who put me in touch with a local producer. We hit it off as soon as we met. I went to his studio (my first time ever recording) and recorded my demo in two months. It was a true collaboration! So for the past 5 years, I’ve been building my repertoire of songs. As a result of writing, singing and networking, I’ve been paid to demo songs, do background singing and sing hooks for acts such as John Brown (a signed artist to Universal Republic Records), Nathan R. (signed artist to L’Renee, who tours with Kem) and various local artists. I’ve also performed at Hard Rock Café, the African World Festival as well as at my alma mater for the 2009 Graduating Class, which was an honor. As a singer/songwriter, I hope develop my craft further by collaborating with different producers. My ultimate dream is to get placements with independent/major artists, become a recording artist or get a publishing deal.
