Originally from Chicago, but currently based in San Diego, Astra Kelly croons like the love child of rock and soul raised by beat poets of the 21st century. She is a music industry darling wearing many hats and embodying the DIY attitude with unbridled enthusiasm. She DJ'd the local show (The KPRI Homegrown Hour) on San Diego's Triple AAA station, 102.1 KPRI, from Jan. 2007-May 2009. She made her TV debut in summer of 2008 as guest host for KPRI and NBC 7/39’s Concerts on the Square during Streetside San Diego. Currently she manages Studiowest in Rancho Bernardo where she recently completed her fifth CD release. She performs live frequently, solo/acoustic or with the band and regularly books and promotes shows in and around SD featuring some of San Diego’s best local bands and songwriters. Her early interest in music was fueled by family jams, school choirs and formal music studies. Astra is a rare talent with a universal, lyric-based, melodic sound that is an original blend of her Chicago roots in funk and blues merged with rock and acoustic elements. Her passionate performance style is derived from her days of street performing in Chi-town, incessant touring, and an undeniable devotion to the music. Her lyrics read like poetry, speaking of emotional transformation and personal freedom. Whether armed with only an acoustic guitar or onstage with the full electric band, her delivery is an intensely powerful expression of her art and sound. She has toured extensively over the years, both as a solo performer and as a member of various other projects. Astra is a 3x San Diego Music Award nominee and her "All I Got" video is was showcased at last year's San Diego Film Festival. She's just released her fifth studio album, the "Battling the Sun" EP, and plans on releasing another EP in the fall of 2010.
