Born of a swan song in Portland, Oregon, A((wake)) ripped their way into the metal scene in 2005 with their debut album, The Crescent. This entry established their progressively transcendent rock sound. The band's latest album, Northern Lights, layers Cameron Taylor’s movingly diverse guitar and Ian Engblom’s rousing bass over Brian Lawson’s architected drums. With standout tracks like Polars and Color Theory, the music of A((wake)) appeals to metal fans and non-metal fans alike. A((wake)) chose the epic instrumental sounds of bands like Isis, Red Sparrowes, and Pelican, as a foundation to build its own form of progressive modern metal. The band succeeded in merging these somber and uplifting tones with the crushing and lunatic sounds of bands like Meshuggah, Textures, and Sikth. The Crescent ran the gamut from pure metal energy to dramatic melodies, finishing with an acoustic finale crafted to bring fans back to earth. This album was accompanied by a slew of West Coast tour dates, in which crowds were refreshed with the lush, rambling textures of the debut EP that were showcased onstage with the band’s darkly energetic presence. With their new album Northern Lights on store shelves, A((wake)) is covering the Northwest with their unique soundscape, making friends at every stop. Northern Lights exhibits constant evolution, in which every song takes the ear through always-original progressions, from emotional contentedness to blistering cavalcades of metal reverberation. A((wake))’s approach to music surprises most and makes impressions on all.
