The Boathouse Weirdos concept was conceived by Tom Meyer, Sally Bishop and Somerset Barnard during a night out at a local watering hole in November 2007. The Boathouse Weirdos concept was conceived by Tom Meyer, Sally Bishop and Somerset Barnard during a night out at a local watering hole in November 2007. Prior to this, the members had been performing as a country-rock trio under the guise of 'Red Earth'. The Boathouse Weirdos' name is partly derived from the location of a number of their early performances: a Boathouse by the river in Brisbane's Western suburbs. In April 2008, the Weirdos added to their line-up, bassist Steve De Gunst, a wily veteran from Inverell, NSW. Commonly referred to as Fluke, De Gunst provided a harder edge to the Weirdos sound contributing such songs as 'Drink' and 'Snake Valley' among others. After releasing the 'Greed' EP in June, the band embarked on a series of regularly entertaining shows in Brisbane and regional areas of Queensland and New South Wales throughout the second half of the year before taking a short break over the new year. The new-look lineup of Bishop, De Gunst and Meyer emerged in February 2009 with a tighter sound and a host of new songs ready to showcase across the land. Stay tuned for details on the upcoming projects in the works and a Boathouse Weirdos gig near you.
