About B.U.K.W.I. -BrothersUnitedKulturallyW/Intelligence Bukwi from carlita on Vimeo. Virginia was unaware of the siege that laid before their very eyes & ears in early 2007, as the local music scene was clueless as to who exactly Bukwi was. Too many times was Bukwi (pronounced BUCK*WHY) told that they couldn't do it. They were told time and time again that they wouldn't be accepted. They were told that because their skin color was not black, they'd fail. But to King Louie, DJ Cool Mo & Tony Nucklez... they just didn't believe it. They were told by local reggae personalities that they would feel the wrath of local artists who felt Bukwi were making a mockery of reggae. But, in the end, the whole State of Virginia fell to their knees as Bukwi massacred the competition, continuously made hit after hit, & captured the hearts and minds of those who love Reggae for what it's about: UNITY. Bukwi climbed the local music scene extremely fast, as their first gig was in-front of a crowd of 800+. Their 5th gig was playing at the beloved NorVa, which wasn't nothing for them in terms of anxiety before performing. Virginia has fallen in love with the most dynamic, interesting, bombastic, eclectic, energetic, fascinating and talented group to ever grace a Virginia-stage: BUKWI! Their unique and mesmerizing fusion with Hip-Hop & Reggae has garnered them a plethora of awards and publicity throughout The Virginia Pilot, The Link Newspaper, Link757.com, VirginiaReggae.com, VirginiaReggaeAwards.com, Spin.Com, Spin Magazine and more! Although the group primarily focuses on spreading the word of God/Jah + positivity, do beware... as the velocity of their anger can very easily be let out. And it's not a pretty sight when these guys are upset. Reason being: even until late 2008, Bukwi have endured COUNTLESS accounts of criticism, racism, denial, betrayal, distrust & stupidity in the State of Virginia. Local DJ's, sound-systems, promoters, bands, artists, rappers, singers, managers & more have all placed their cards on the table AGAINST Bukwi. But, with the odds stacked against them so heavily, Bukwi have continued to trod on without worry or neglect. They won two Virginia Reggae Awards for "Best New Artist" & "Song of the Year" in May 2008. Performing alongside and opening up for the likes of Collie Buddz, Damian Marley, Morgan Heritage, Queen Ifrica, The Itals, Elephant Man, Sizzla, Capleton, Yellowman & more have given the guys new hope for acceptability in an otherwise cruel world fueled by division and racism. With Tony Nucklez handling the Hip-Hop side, DJ Cool Mo handling all musical operations & King Louie switching up between Reggae & Reggaeton - there is absolutely no feat too hard that Bukwi cannot grasp. Besides, aren't they used to being told "NO"???
