‘Come from Yaad’ and caught her star…. Born in Jamaica, Camille Newman began singing at a very early age winning medals on local levels including the Jamaica Festival Singing Competition and featured in various national shows including “Rappin.” She was also a violinist and received a commendation from the Royal School of Music in London. Migrating to the United States in her teens, Camille performed with the Science Skills Center High School choir, then directed by Monique Walker and with the Restoration Mass Choir. In true triple threat fashion she also studied African Dance under Patricia Dye and later went on to Perform in Dance Africa alongside Chuck Davis. Throughout high school Camille won various talent shows and actively pursued a record deal, but like most young singers this road was fraught with disappointment and dishonest promises. She followed dance through college with the semi-professional dance troupe Dance Diaspora directed by Adenike Sharpley and in her junior year presented “Patois: Yardie Nommo” a selection of pieces reflecting Jamaican culture- folksongs, kumina, poco and dancehall pieces. Singing continued to tug at her heart strings, so Camille would perform at college “soul sessions” and open mics. With the encouragement of her vocal coach, Kim Harley, she joined BAMSS - By All Means Save Some Theatre Group, led by TONY award winning actor Ben Harney - where she got BITTEN. Camille was chosen to play the lead role of Effie in the Broadway and Brooklyn revival of Dreamgirls. By the close of the show, she was IN LOVE with music again. Dreamgirls reignited her passion for music and songwriting. Fast forward to 2009; Camille has completed an independent gospel album with her beloved friend, producer extraordinaire, Andre Danek. The project is entitled "UNASHAMED," and it is an album infused with hip hop, R&B and reggae; a melting pot of musical influences. She writes to encourage people and through the Word, transform the unbeliever through her music. Her music is uniquely inspirational as her songs talk in-depth about how God delivered her from hurt, men, people’s opinions, sex and all the other dysfunctions that can plague a single saved female! Her music lives to teach people how to be a Christian, walk with Jesus and live a good and fun life without comprising the true word of God! Though she still struggles in her own walk, what she is certain of is that God loves her and she might fall but she will ALWAYS get back up!
