After a decade of playing guitar in bands ranging from Jazz Trios to Bar Bands; after years of formal studies in music theory, Jazz improvisation, and Bluegrass picking techniques; after years as a solo artist playing covers in venues around Boston; and after one busy year of composing, arranging, and recording, Chad Gosselin has released his debut EP, An Uncelebrated Homecoming. It is an evocative and layered collection of songs reminiscent of Wilco and Elliott Smith, a soulful testimony to the experience of coming of age and to terms with your hometown. The album’s finely crafted five songs feature interplaying layers of mandolin, pedal steel, electric, acoustic and bass guitars all skillfully elaborating on the compositions’ strong melodic arrangements. Perhaps even more remarkable than the wonderful sound this interplay achieves is that Chad is playing every one of these instruments, and singing. If you have any room left to be further impressed, consider too that Chad arranged and recorded these songs in a shoestring home studio himself. Taking the last year to teach himself the ins and outs of recording, Chad has proven that when it comes to music, his dedication, skill, and professionalism plus time equals excellence. The album strongly plays to the strengths of Alt-Country, but to pigeon hole this musician is certainly a disservice. Chad isn’t doing a Jeff Tweedy impression, but rather bringing his diverse range of influences and years of intensive study to a music all his own. These influences include Jazz Guitar innovators like Grant Green and Charlie Christian, Blues icons Mississippi John Hurt and Robert Johnson, Classic American Roots like Bill Monroe and the Carter Family, and Contemporary Rock Artists like Band of Horses and Fleet Foxes. Chad Gosselin is a seasoned performer, a consummate professional, and a talented recording artist, but above all Chad Gosselin is a great musician. You can likely find him tirelessly promoting An Uncelebrated Homecoming at a venue near you.
