Daniel Harris has always had a keen ear for music. He started off in Primary School learning the Violin, pursing this instrument for just over a year before giving it up for other interests. It would be a few years before he would start to learn another instrument. It was in his early teen years when the Goth-rock band Evanescence came onto the scene. After hearing their debut album ‘Fallen’ he instantly fell in love with its melodic tones, and dark under-feel. The song My Immortal was the song that would spark up his interest in music once again. Having bought a keyboard he set about learning the piano instrumental of ‘My Immortal’, with no coaching and no training in playing piano. Within a few days he had taught himself his first tune. During his first year at college his friends and he would go to the music block at every opportunity to practice. With their help he began to play and sing at the same time. During all this he had began to write his own lyrics. Some reflecting his own life and others taking a light hearted approach to situations. It was now that his parents brought him his first piano for Christmas. Thrilled with this he started to pour his heart and soul into writing his own music. Within months he had the basic building blocks for his first song – ‘In Peace’. In summer of 2007 he recorded his first song in his own home with a crude handheld microphone. The first demo of this song sounded somewhat crude and hard to hear compared to the new version, but the basic idea of the song was there. Later he saved up for a condenser microphone and would record the song again, this time with a Strings arrangement and Drums track, written by himself. It was the first time he had attempted to write a Strings and Drums arrangement. After letting a few friends and family listen to this updated song he gained the confidence to write some new songs. For his 18th Birthday he bought an electric guitar, which soon became his second favourite instrument. During the following year he set about teaching himself to play, with basic knowledge of guitar from a classical guitar he had from when he was younger. Drawing upon inspiration from his life Daniel set about writing his second song – ‘The Cheerleader Girl’. With its fast drums, punk-pop guitar and light-hearted lyrics this soon became the inspiration for future songs such as ‘Leave This Town’ and ‘I Miss You… But Don’t Come Home!’. With the knowledge of seven instruments, Piano, Keyboards, Guitar (both electric and acoustic), Bass and Drums (albeit not great) and Violin, he began to experiment a bit more with his music. Trying out different styles, writing a more heavy song – in the style of Evanescence – called ‘Secret Thoughts’. He now hopes to start bringing his own style into his music more and creating a feel that he is comfy with and a style that people will come to recognise as his music.
