It was a confident eleven-year old Debrah Kay who took the stage as Dorothy in a sixth grade production of The Wizard of Oz. It was a confident eleven-year old Debrah Kay who took the stage as Dorothy in a sixth grade production of The Wizard of Oz. She had been singing since the age of eight, copying the sounds and performances of her idol, Stevie Nicks, but this was the first major test for the Mesquite, Texas native. “My brother-in-law had the most amazing record collection. He had every album you could think of from The Beatles, to Chuck Mangione, Peter Frampton, BB King, Waylon and Willie and Kenny Rogers.” Her favorite album, Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumors.” “As a kid, I’d line up chairs in our living room and make my family be my audience. I loved putting on skits and plays.” Debrah continued performing throughout high school where she entertained at programs with her church youth group. She also performed in the annual Spring Show, a community variety show put on by her high school cheerleading squad along with the drill team members. Following high school, Debrah began songwriting and performing with her own band in local clubs and at county fairs throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Soon she was approached by the lead singer for a popular band, “Desert Dust,” which was interested in adding a female to its all male act. With the addition of Debrah, “Desert Dust” enjoyed much success and she was credited with developing their huge fan base. Debrah’s high-energy performances generated excitement, captivating audiences with an almost hypnotic effect. No one was immune as evidenced by the many people who lined up after the shows for autographs and photos. In early 1998, Debrah moved to Nashville, where she met and befriended several fellow songwriters. She soon began co-writing and working in the studio. In September, she completed her first CD, a collection of songs co-written by Debrah and songwriter/musician, Mike Baker. Utilizing some of Nashville’s top musicians, Debrah formed her own band, “Grizzly Rose” and began performing in and around Middle Tennessee. During that time, Debrah acquired numerous fans, prompting the formation of the Debrah Kay Fan Club. A second CD, “Wild At Heart,” was released in the summer of 2000, followed by “Jamaica’s Waitin,” in 2002. Jamaica’s Waitin’ features thirteen songs written by Debrah and co-writer Mike Baker. This was the first CD Debrah co-produced. With the release of “Jamaica’s Waitin,” Debrah has enjoyed much success with sales as well as tour dates. She has participated in the CMA Country Music Festival since 1998. In late 2002, Debrah realized a life-long dream as she performed on stage at the Grand Ole Opry. In 2004, Debrah’s big break came with her third CD, “I Think It’s Gonna Rain.” Its release, however would have to wait. Signed to a record contract with Mercury Records, Debrah’s album was a casualty of that company’s merger with Universal Music Group. Debrah released the CD independently, however in late 2004 and the response has been overwhelming. Debrah has opened for numerous artists at Fairs and Festivals, including Lorrie Morgan, Ty England, Trent Tomlinson, Keith Anderson, Trace Adkins and Bucky Covington. Debrah is currently working on her fourth CD, “Something Beautiful,” which features twelve new songs, all written by Debrah Kay. The title cut, is a fun, playful tune celebrating love in a new relationship. Beyond the single, Debrah explores the difficulties of love lost on, “You’re Gonna Leave Me Again,” “Empty,” and “Why.” Her voice smolders with slow burning passion on “Lost in Your Kiss.” And the fun side emerges on “That’s Not Me,” “Destin,” and “Perfume and Gasoline.” “The songs included on this album are probably the best songs I have ever written,” she says. “It all comes down to incorporating real life experiences into your music. My songs are basically movies in my head. When I sing for an audience, all these movies are playing over in my mind and that’s what allows me to communicate those emotions to an audience.” As for her live shows, well, fasten your seat belts. Debrah has honed the craft of using that wireless microphone. She is a true entertainer. Her own excitement for performing resonates into her audience. She is no stranger to leaving the stage; dancing into the audience and making them take notice. Interaction with the audience is one of her strong points. “I just like to get up close and personal.” she says. “It’s fun to dance with someone while you’re singing to them. I just have fun.” And so does her audiences. And that is why her favorite venues are outdoor fairs and festivals. Meeting this incredible lady is like running into a burst of energy. Her success, no doubt, comes from a positive attitude, electrifying talent, and tremendous determination. Charm, honesty and professionalism are three of her greatest assets. It is apparent that those who meet her are instant fans. Debrah Kay’s incredible talent, charming personality on and off stage, her natural beauty and a sheer touch of elegance combine to guarantee her to be a popular attraction where ever she goes and a leading force in today’s country music.
