Starting at a young age December 32nd has been creating music together for 18 years. Show after show and project after project, Ol’boi (Casey Hall) and Big Dirty (Ryan Sturup) have grown into a music creating machine. Making their mark in the industry, they have shared the stage with groups such as Tantric, Flaw, Blindside, Trust Company, Sir-Mix-Alot; to name a few. With great stage presence and plenty of airplay they created a group called, “Camp5”. Teaming up with Val Garris of Cumulus they played non-stop working on their chops for the next level. Just after the turn of the century, Ol’boi and Big Dirty put together EOS which was a female fronted group with the lead singer Mandy Lauderdale, (Temptation Island/MTV). With great potential in the project and a lot of industry attention the group didn’t quite click so they moved on. Big Dirty went on to graduate from “Full Sail” in 2005 & immediately moved to Los Angeles, California to get his feet wet and start creating new relationships for the future to come. Sen was added to the group to bring a new element to the table thus December 32nd was born…they landed a few spots on films such as on James Franco's, “Good Time Max” with their hit song, “Glide”. Big Dirty also cut backgrounds for this independent film in 2007. They also had a song "Reborn" on a movie called 15 Til Midnight. Streetblast.com -- Back in the day, I used to put on local music shows at a venue that will remain nameless, unless you like flea markets. I used to book bands that people wanted to hear, but because they were the "underdogs" in their genre, no other venues would book them. One band in particular was in the same genre category as December 32nd, with a hardcore rap/metal/industrial feel that blew people away when they played out live, but because of the prejudiced bias towards their musical style, they only played out when given a chance. December32 is not an underdog. Ripping through verses, and rocking out at the same time December 32nd is one of those bands that highlights my day when they are played on my station, because their music and determination comes through on each track - with a definate high quality requirement that shows this band does not slap music together. They are refined, smart, and very sexy. So why would I mention that earlier portion of this review by talking about booking shows, and some bands not getting the same breaks as others? It's simple - when you have a discriminating ear and the market is playing the same processed ear candy on the radio over and over, bands like december 32nd are considered new, innovative, and get cut out of the picture. Is this the case for december 32nd? I don't know, perhaps they are overbooked and solid, but the sounds that they create are definately over the top and it's time for mainstream radio to give them a listen and understand that this is a combination of so many genres - it's time to spice up the airwaves. I love December 32nd, I think they are simply hands down a awesome band with a great look, superior sound, and almost groundbreaking in their musical process. For instance, our track we are playing now "Blindfold" is a ball-busting track that hits you heavy and hard with beats, metallics and even harmonic vocals that has made it one of my favorite songs. Are these guys the new frontier in music? I think they put the running on what mainstream radio will become, and yes - they are ahead of their time. These guys are on the advanced level, and other bands should take note…… and if your a venue, get them booked - and become part of the revolution. Viva' la December 32nd!
