It is 9 o’clock Saturday morning, when most people are in their beds sleeping; Kelly (K. Kel) Henderson has just walked in his house after another night on stage at world renowned Bourbon Street. He has been an M.C. at several clubs and has been labeled as one of the best Bourbon has ever seen. Having gathered a fan base of music fans ranging from 18 to 50 years old, K. Kel has followers from other countries coming into New Orleans to watch this 5.9 phenomenon perform. “As much as I love being an M.C., I rather do my own music,” says K. Kel, “Rapping is my passion being able to effect people with my words gives me a rush, and I want the world to feel me.” Instead of going to bed, it is off to the studio for K.kel
Having been born and raised in New Orleans, music has been a big part of his life. Growing up music was in his family. His mother was a touring soul singer in her youth, and his dad was a preacher and a gospel singer. His sister was also a talented rapper and writer. Kelly spent his youth watching Michael Jackson videos and dancing for his family at every gathering and holiday. To them, it is just their little superstar entertaining the family. Little did they know, he would grow to be so much more.
Even though dancing was what came first, at 13 years old he discovered he was given another talent, writing. After several teachers bragged about his essays, short stories, and poems, he decided to take it to the next level by writing songs for his friends. By the time he reached high school, he made his decision to do the impossible, take over the rap industry. He started in small venues, performing several open mic nights and freestyle battles to show off his gift. Showing a style his peers had never seen before and going without losing a battle, K. Kel was given the name The Legend, which he felt at first he did not deserve, it started him on a quest to live up to the name the music world had given him.
“This kid is something special” a phrase that has been said by club owners and local record labels who have worked with him. Kelly is no rookie when it comes to giving a great show, K. Kel has performed everywhere from birthday parties for friends and family to being the opening act for names like Juvenile, Birdman, Lil Wayne. “I listen to all music” states K. Kel “ even though I rap, my favorite genre is rock and R&B.”
Work hard, play harder is a motto that he uses to push himself to do better and come out on top. He gives praises to his team, “The Regulators”; they want it more than he does. After becoming the youngest entertainment director in history, K. Kel and his Regulators put all they have into his music, which no doubt will pay off in the end.
