(BIOGRAPHY) Kuntry Boy DJ: Standing Strong Adversity knows no race, creed or geographic preference. That much, however contested, is true. The hardships faced in the grittiest barrio can relate to the flatland countryside if there is seemingly little hope for anything better. In the situation of DJ Grant aka Kuntry Boy DJ, it doesn’t matter what your environment is—it is up to you to overcome it and he has. Born and raised in east Texas, the thought of being a rapper was something that was not only uncommon; it was looked down upon entirely. The population of Eustace consisted of more literal cowboys than hardcore hip hop fans and with little to no support from his classmates, this became the first major hurdle in DJ’s life. Brushing off the nonbelievers, doubters and outright haters, his first recording came from a homemade studio. While the quality wasn’t the best, it showed doubly that he had heart and skill and heads began taking notice. The second major snag for DJ was the near non-existence of a musical presence in his area. Taking the independent route, word of mouth had him performing at birthday parties, hole-in-the-wall pubs and night clubs. Shortly after, the buzz he’d generated around the area caught the attention of Carlos Rodriguez and Mosaca Entertainment. The two would work together to put out Kuntry’s first true independent release (The Beginning) backed by an aggressive street marketing campaign that spanned an impressive 1000 bulk press up of songs, freestyles and demos that further solidified DJ as an artist to be reckoned with. His work ethic is rarely matched, a trait that has opened doors he couldn’t have imagined beforehand, evident by his invitation to perform at Houston rap icon Trae the Truth’s Trae Day 2010 alongside major label artists Yo Gotti, Young Buck and Gorilla Zoe. Doing shows in local hotspots such as Dallas, Cedar Hill, Oak Cliff and Fort Worth has helped KBDJ create a loyal and ever expanding fan base eager for music that different from the norm of the audio bravado waxed and waned in the mainstream. Kuntry Boy DJ doesn’t just appear and sound different; he is different. You can hear the honesty in his music and in his lifestyle. Never have used any drug, he is a shining example of what you can do when you aren’t always chasing that artificial high. In a game where no one wants to be a role model Kuntry has no issue with putting that burden on his back: “I’m okay with being a role model…I always had them growing up and now I can be one to someone else.” Gearing up for the release of the first single “I Make You Like It” from his upcoming collaborative effort with BNG Records entitled The 1st Impression, the anticipation levels are higher than they’ve ever been for an independent artist of his caliber and he’s ready. When asked what the album will sound like, he states, “Feel good music that fits any situation. I have the club songs, the in your face hard songs, and even some flashy cuts. What’s going to surprise everyone is that I can write songs about anything and make what you’re going through not as tough to get over.” Whatever challenges he may face it is evident that Kuntry Boy DJ is standing strong.
