Drew Henkels is a day-dreamer and late-sleeper. He is a doodler and entrepreneur. A decade's worth of carefully crafted songs, illustrated dream logs, and "music-films" made in basements, garages, and converted Brooklyn factories have slowly snowballed into one cohesive project. Drew & the Medicinal Pen is the collective efforts of bassist Anna Morsett, violinist Missy Liu, and drummer Zach Arlan to put into music and lyrics the ideas, anxieties, and stories that swirl around the visual side of the project.
Over the past two years, the band has released a 6-song EP, toured the East Coast and Midwest, and played countless independent venues, lofts, and art spaces across Philadelphia, Brooklyn, and beyond. Now, despite the cave-like dwellings from which it was hatched, Drew & the Medicinal Pen's second release "Heavy Head" has the outside world looking in. Recently, the band collaborated with Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty, recieved airplay on Japanese radio, and was featured in an article that ran front page in the New York Times on young Brooklyn artists. From that strange figurative gap between teenage punk-rocker and complacent 20-something indie-blah-rocker, Drew & the Medicinal Pen craft "bedroom-pop messterpieces" that refuse to give up an angsty obsession with the magic and utter weirdness of the world, and it's only getting better with age.
