Meet Faylita Hicks, a young twenty-something year old woman whose voice and poetry have been making waves in the Austin and San Marcos communities for years now. Born in the rising sun of California, this beautiful Austinite attributes her growth as a writer and performer to her family and friends, local artists, and real life experiences."When I'm done, I want to be one of those women who changed the nation,"states Faylita in one of her self confidence pieces. And indeed she is well on her way. She began her journey as a young girl of eleven, writing in her diary and writing songs for her and her sisters to sing. As time went on, her desire for the stage grew immensely when she was cast in her first school play."I remember thinking, wow, what if I could do this everyday?" That play turned into to more plays, which turned into singing, which eventually lead Faylita to poetry. After experiencing up close and personal a Spoken Word poet in the summer of 2003, she took on the commission she felt she'd been given. "My hand wouldn't stop moving!" smiles Faylita as she looks back on the experience. In the fall of 2003, Faylita took the trip to San Marcos to attend Texas State University, where she studied Theatre and English for two years before returning to Austin and continuing her studies at ACC. In that time, she was able to self publish her first chapbook, Transformations. In the fall of 2006, Faylita returned to Texas State to be an active member in her sorority, Gamma Sigma Sigma, and to put to use the real life lessons she had experienced. She currently plans on completing her first degree in May 2009.Since 2003, she has taught dozens of workshops focused on drama, performance, poetry, and self confidence to students and the community alike. She has traveled all across Texas to compete in local, regional, and national poetry competitions. In 2007, she earned a spot on the Neo Soul /Austin Slam team that participated in the National Poetry Slam and placed. In December of 2007, Faylita Hicks made her online debut as the only female in the final five contestants of the international internet talent contest, Famecast.com. She has enjoyed the chance to join the stage with other excellent poets such as Marc Marcel, Michael Guinn, LaLove Robinson, Christopher Lee, Element615, Kim “13” Taylor, Brian Francis, Michelle Desiree, Ebony, and various others from around the awesome state of Texas. Today, you can find her on the open mic, studying on the Texas State campus, or simply writing her next book, Bus Stop Poet!
