Fusing post-rock aesthetics with cultural influences and a deep social awareness, rock band Great empty is intent on inspiring themselves and others with their own brand of dynamically-charged instrumental music. For them music is the divine and they wish to seek union with it through their heartfelt compositions of esoteric melodies and cleverly-layered harmonies. "Our goal is simple: to be intimate with music. I wish I could speak like music, but the band is more or less a vehicle for introspection, so I let the music speak for me" says Saifudin Sapari, the band's bassist and founding member of the collective of four. Equal parts mellow, deep, and pounding with ferocious intent; their music may jolt, calm or induce dancing in the listener all at the same time. Tirelessly independent, they have self-released their debut EP "Desire the Creator" in March 2010 through collaborating with a roster of similar-minded people. The record features spoken word vocals, classical indian singing and folk instruments such as the pianica and harmonica; all helping to fulfill their vision of creating an honest and organic sounding album. Socially inspired, the band has played in support of charities such as the Flea 'n' Fun fundraiser organised by Going Om in 2009 to help build a library for a school in Nepal; they have also organised and performed in August 2010 for Migrant Sounds, a gig meant to raise awareness for local non-profit group Migrant Voices alongside other local artists such as Mux, David Lin and Seyra. Great empty is currently working hard on finding new modes and textures of narrative material for their upcoming full-length album.
