It’s not so much the words we’d say it’s the ones we didn’t It’s not so much the games we’d play it’s the way we hit it Hide-n-seek slowly turned to show-n-tell Kissing cheeks later led to lips as well It isn’t that I fell too hard it’s the way I landed When you let me go and left me empty, empty handed But it’s not so much the losing touch as losing focus Broken like an unconvincing ‘hocus pocus’ When I spoke with you this weekend you were so indifferent I never knew and arm’s length could make one so distant It’s better if I never had loved you at all What’s worse than love that’s lost is one you won’t recall Drowning in a dream that will not let me wake up Caught between your morning hair and evening make up But it’s not so much the breaking as it is the bending Of promises that you and I were both pretending— It’s not so much a heartbreak… Poignant and poetic lines like these from the bridge of ‘Not So Much a Heartbreak’ are the reason musician friends have affectionately nicknamed Harmony the “lyrical assassin.” Influenced by logophiliacs like Fiona Apple, Adam Duritz (Counting Crows) and Lauryn Hill, the lyricism of his debut EP Love Is Not an Accident is intelligent and imaginative but never inaccessible. Harmony’s gift of phrasing, timing, pacing and rhyming intrigues the avid liner-note-lyric-reader and the casual listener alike. His voice is no less captivating. Soulful and sweet, Harmony, sings with sun-kissed smokiness. Alt-rock aficionados will rightly hear the influence of singer-songwriters like Ben Harper and Jeff Buckley. Urban audiences tend to hear pop-savvy blue-eyed soul in the vein of Gavin DeGraw or Maroon 5. Whatever one hears, there’s little doubt that Harmony’s voice is equally equipped for heartbreaking ballads and rock-n-roll hymns. The production and arrangement of these six songs reinforce Harmony’s message-driven melodies. Love Is Not an Accident contains the soaring kind of rock songs that resonate with fans of U2, Switchfoot and The Fray. These are not for the three-minutes-of-flavor bubblegum poppers, nor the new-sound-but-no-substance hipsters. These are introspective anthems for those discontented by the status quo, the down but not out, wounded world changers, activists, believers and romantics. Love Is Not an Accident is an affirmation, a call to action. Life is on purpose and for a purpose: love is not an accident.
