"A revealing proposal" is the way how Semana, a local publication (and one of the most read and influential in Colombia’s opinion) defines the music of Hotel Mama. A fresh group that offers something that is not seen often. A female voice that is both sweet and strong, an alto sax with Colombian sounds tangled in its notes and a tight rhythmic base assembled as a clockwork machine. In other words, Hotel Mama represents the best of traditional Colombian music expressed through more conventional voices (as rock, jazz and funk, at its best). This makes their music an "international sound" with solid grounds in Colombian tradition as it was mentioned in Shock magazine (a publication aimed towards younger audiences). Since its start in late 2006, Hotel Mama has received the praise from several audiences (Colombia / Venezuela / Mexico / Ecuador / USA / Spain / Italy / France) and experienced critical opinions of the local music scene. Magazines such ase Rolling Stone (Latin America’s edition), SPIN (USA), CMJ Marathon NY (USA), Shock, Semana, Bacanika magazine (Colombia), La Onda magazine (Ecuador), have featured the music made by these 5 young people who are full of energy at live, musical acuity, excited performances and bracing fusion. In 2008 the Semana magazine review the first record of the band as one of the top 10 of Colombia and during the same year the Rolling Stone magazine, choose the song "Arena Blanca" (“ White Sand”) as one of the most important singles of the year. During July 2009 the CMJ festival held in New York and Sonicbids.com chose the band as Spotlight on their websites, with other indie bands around the world. These important awards have earned them invitations to act next to artists such as Telefunka from Mexico, Chobquibtown, Dr Krapula, and Pernett from Colombia; also to play at massive outdoor festivals like Rock al Parque (one of the biggest in Latin America) and Quitu Raymi Fest in Ecuador, also at demanding and specialized venues as the National Museum of Colombia and the auditorium Leon de Greiff (the largest in the country) as in different national television shows. Hotel Mama started 2011 being the national winners of the contest The Battle of the bands, organized worldwide by the Hard Rock Cafe International. After defeating 6 of the best known national bands Hotel Mama triumphs in the professional category of the competition. As a reward, the band is sent to the city of London in mid-June. Likewise, Hotel Mama will perform a live concert for the 2011 televised version of the "Shock" music awards. Thanks to their outstanding perform at that competition, Yamaha offers sponsorship to the band. By early 2011 the band also received invitations to perform at 2 showcases at the well-known festival in Austin TX, USA, South by Southwest, SXSW. More than 10,000 groups worldwide are enrolled each year to be part of this important event in which world-class groups have participated. The international agenda of the band for 2011 has dates in London, Miami and Atlanta, including the Colombian Independence Festival. Currently the group is recording their second album called "El grande" this production already shows the maturity and the sound coupling of the band, this year Hotel Mama plans to release their second single "Sube pa ver" a champeta that reveals a new way to make folk music in Colombia, projecting them as one of the young bands of the country with the largest greeted, nationally and internationally.
