After a slow two years, James McHugh (Vocals, Acoustic Guitar, Piano, and Baritone Sax) and Nick Deveau (Drums and Percussion), began recording a demo in June, 2011. The two met freshman year in a Boston-area high school, and have played in jazz groups together throughout their time at school, playing as many jazz gigs as they do pop. The amount of time they have spend together in class has beautifully fostered their rhythmic relationship and ability to interact on stage. The two would frequently jam outside of class, but schoolwork delayed the recording of the demo two years, after the idea of creating one came up in practice one day freshman year. "The Demo," quickly became a topic surrounded by great laughter and skepticism--it seemed as if the two would never pick themselves up out of the rut of procrastination before the two graduated. Finally, however, the two set up one afternoon in a practice room for three hours and recorded the first two tracks, "Rearranging" and "Another Try."
The 4 tracks of the demo become increasingly dense with instrumentation, beginning with just James on guitar and singing, then adding Nick on Cajon, and finally adding a full band. This progression from clear, mellow acoustic, to driving full band is not by chance. It, in fact, represents James's transition from an acoustic singer-songwriter to a multi-instrument composer.
