Brothers Chris and Evan Brown were born and raised on a rural property on the Central Coast of NSW Australia. Both homeschooled, they've had opportunities to develop many interests from horse riding, competitive ballroom dancing and trading the stock market... In late 2006, whilst sitting for the HSC, Chris taught himself how to play the guitar and keyboards and convinced his brother Evan to teach himself to play the drums. The band Kotadama was born! Kotadama means “Spirit of words” Towards the end of 2007, at 19 & 21 Chris and Evan began writing and performing their own songs. With their exposure to open learning, combined with extensive travel with their dad across Australia, the two brothers developed a relatively wide perspective of the world. In July 2008, they attended a MMF meeting at Studio 301 and met Peter Blyton. Peter liked their style of creativity and offered his help to produce their songs. After, having several recording sessions at well known Sydney recording studios, Chris and Evan still weren’t satisfied with the finished product. So, in keeping with the earthy sound, Kotadama converted a disused farm shed into a very effective recording studio, and began producing their songs. Towards the end of 2008, Chris and Evan began recording their first album, “Dichotomy” and acquired the help of two other friends to perform live (Clint Fish and Scott Mallard). They approached numerous Australian radio stations nationwide for airplay and did an Amrap send out with Three Simple Words. Despite very positive feedback on their sound, from Program directors, found that airplay was a very limited option. (They were unsigned) Undeterred, they began sending out their songs overseas. Within a short period of time, they were being accepted for airplay worldwide. Their first three songs entered in the European %100 song writing competition made the finals. In the first half of 2009, their songs have been picked up worldwide for airplay, magazine reviews and keen interest from several large promotional companies and record labels. Early 2009, Howard Rosen offered to promote their songs to some top radio stations. Despite constant resistance, “See You Tonight” got airplay on KISS fm, New York. It quickly became the top song request in May 2009. (The station emailed this achievement). In late May, Kotadama was chosen to showcase their first album at the Kansai Music Conference, Osaka in September 2009. This is the first conference of its kind in Japan. Currently (June) this song is getting airplay on a station in Houston and their website has had 24,000 hits from Houston in 20 days. Their first video clip, “Three simple words” ( do it yourself effort) has just been chosen for promotion on the major US networks, FOX, CBS, NBC, AMG, MyTV affiliates for a month.
