A dedicated student and practitioner of the music of Hip Hop culture, Logan P. McCoy or Lucky Logan as he’s known by friends and associates is a far cry from the average Hip Hop musician. A prolific poet, lyricist, MC and gifted music producer with a very unique ear for sonic composition, Lucky Logan has garnered over a decade of experience, writing, recording, manufacturing and selling his own brand of Hip Hop music. One of the pioneers of the late nineties’ NYC independent CD street sales movement, He and his longtime friend Sdaerd (pronounced Sa-Dear’d) also a prolific poet, lyricist and MC, made a name for themselves just by the sheer volume of albums they produced in the six year period they spent selling their music on the streets of New York.
Spawning a trend that still exists today, Logan and Sdaerd along with a few other local artists took to the streets soliciting sales of their own DIY projects. With over ten albums to his production and writing credit along with the numerous stage appearances they made pre and post that “training period” as Logan likes to call it helped define the direction Logan was to inevitably take musically. That period of rapidly releasing records and then selling them hand to hand gave Logan great insight into the creative and business aspects of being an artist. An independent one at that.
Armed with a very tangible experience, Logan has truly developed himself into a truly unique expression of Hip Hop. With a strong belief that no one has a monopoly on how Hip Hop is defined, Logan has drawn from his influences, life experiences and personal insight to create music that just happens to be Hip Hop, that speaks to the human condition. Not sticking to any particular style or sound, Logan’s brand of Hip Hop music spans the spectrum of music genres, from the hard underground New York sound to guitar laden indie rock tracks. With a vision to create timeless Hip Hop music, Logan’s echoes a readily noticeable out-worldly yet familiar vibe that a lot of first time listeners of his music label as “different yet instantly likable.” The opposite is true as well about Logan’s music in that it inspires extreme dislike for other first time listeners. Logan, undaunted by this and from his eternally optimistic perspective believes it a good thing “…since it inspires some kind of emotion in them.”
Just recently, a blogger told Logan his “music was too deep for Hip Hop” after which Logan curtly responded “so learn how to swim”. This is the sort of ridicule Logan has dealt with since he started making music. After ten years of honing his craft and developing as an artist, he’s learned to “not compromise confidently” while dealing with, often dismissing his critics and criticism quite diplomatically. According to Logan, music is simply an extension and expression of his spiritual self. Like all creatives, he often wonders where his abilities and everything else for that matter come from. Logan reasons, what better way to find out than to use the art itself as an instrument of search. As a result, his lyrics often expresses ideas rarely heard in Hip Hop and at a depth unparalleled. A self described “secular spiritualist”, Logan says he uses his own music a reminder of his real purpose and quest in life, “to find out a little more about myself while I’m here, why not?”.
