Losers Like Us - The Story I Heard There are many renditions of the Losers Like Us story, but the one I’ve heard goes like this. Texas born Loser Dave had just busted out of a Mexican jail for a crime he says he didn’t commit. Loser Bill was hiding from the angry husband of a pretty Senorita. Loser Cliff was munching on some chips and salsa watching Telemundo when the three troubadours first met at a tuesday night open mic in a border town cantina called Rico Suave’s. Over the course of the evening, after too many sappy ballads by wine toting love poets the semi-packed room of banditos, truck drivers and Amway representatives became restless. They wanted something different. They needed to be entertained. That’s when Losers Like Us was born. Finishing off a heaping helping of arroz con pollo and downing a cold cerveza, Loser Dave grabbed his banjo, motioned to his new friends to follow him up to the stage to save the bar, the world from the slow, excruciating torture of the forlorn crooning taking place that evening. Loser Bill sensing an opportunity firmly placed on his Kenny Chesney hat, kissed the surprised waitress and whipped out his trusty acoustic guitar. Loser Cliff hauled up an bass guitar and a bag of essential utensils including a harmonica, snoopy harp and cow bell. The room grew agitated but clearly intrigued at what later has been compared to a Circus Tent Fire or a good o’l Southern Train Wreck. Everyone loves a train wreck and Rico Suave’s on a Tuesday Night was no exception. Loser Bill started off with a roadhouse ditty he wrote years before with Alabama born Marc Alan Barnette and California songstress Bev Nelson called “My Inlaws might be Outlaws.” An uptempo banjo fueled true story that got boots tappin’ the floor and women dancing on tables. Following that tune, Loser Cliff wasted no time belting out “I Wish I’d Met You Sooner.” A true trailer park love song written on a drift boat floating down the Mississippi with Nashville resident Joshua Rush. High harmonies, searing guitars and blue collar humor put the crowd in a sweaty frenzy where at this point sappy poet boy was seen sneaking out the back door with his Taylor Guitar between his legs. Beer was flowing at a frantic pace, people were swarming in through the front door as Loser Dave hurtled out of control into a song his mother used to play for him when he was a young boy stealing hubcaps in Houston. “Roadkill” featuring Loser Bill on Mandolin took the joint to a spiritual place where some folks later commented they saw the face of Jesus in a side of guacamole. Whether any of this true or even if heavily exaggerated, most everyone who have heard the music of Losers Like Us or have seen their show live always walk away with a smile on their face, a song in their heart, and a rather severe, alcohol induced hangover. Losers Like Us is not a myth nor are they legend. They are 3 guys that live by a simple, yet profound musical credo - “No Ballads. Don’t Suck.” By request from their 5 faithful fans, Losers Like Us decided to released their first CD - The Losers Like Us “9-Pack.” A collection of their most beloved songs in a CD package featuring photographs taken by Loser-friend Joshua Rush and produced by hit songwriter Kevin Fisher, formerly of Naked To The World. So, why did successful producer/songwriter like Kevin decide to work with Losers Like Us? Because we paid him cash and we brought beer to the recording sessions!
