Coming from San Diego CA, Young Mass (Derrick Stanton Jr.), has had his sights on making hip-hop history since the age of twelve. He soon realized, after weeks of searching for beats to record to, that he might as well learn how to produce music as well as write and perform lyrics since he was new to it all. By the 9th grade, Mass had gotten his skills and confidence levels up so high that the freshman class asked him to represent them a the school spirit assembly. Although very nervous, Mass performed original material in front of his entire high school alone, including all the students, teachers, and all other school officials. This set not only the school a blaze, but it also did something to him. It sparked a light inside of him that he still carries to this day. By 16, Mass was introduced to Shock G. (Digital Underground) and the two immediately hit it off. Shock was so impressed by Mass's demo that he invited him on stage that night. Soon after, Mass was invited to the studio to finish Shock G's 2003 release : Fear of a Mixed Planet, which was met with warm reviews. Mass would go on to become an official member of D.U. for about 5 years, touring and helping create music for projects until they disbanded in 2007. Digital Underground chose the Mass produced song: Blue Skyy as their first single on their final full studio LP: Cause a DU Party Don't Stop. Shortly after the split, Mass was searching for work and stumbled across a fitness gym that was owned by Andre Young (Dr. Dre). Due to his positive attitude and up beat personality, Mass was giving a job. Having no contact with Dre yet, Mass quietly perfected his craft at home. Eventually Mass and Dre would meet and quickly grow close due to their common love for music. The good Doctor started bringing beats and unreleased material in for Mass to give his opinion on. Months later, Dre finally asked Mass if he made beats and the rest was history. Dr. Dre became a mentor of the young producer giving active feedback, pointers, suggestions, and some time input on the instrumentals Mass brought him. When Dre 1st heard Mass rhyme, he immediately requested that he ghostwrite some records for him for Detox which have yet to be released. Since then, Mass has collaborated with a list of artist such as: Dj. Quick, B-Real, Sticky Fingaz, Mitchy Slick, and Yukmouth... Performed live with: Too Short, Three Six Mafia, Ray-J, Sean Kingston, Baby Bash, Pitbull, Hurricane Chris, and Wiz Kalifa. In 2008, Mass released his self tilted unofficial debut: Young Mass independently via his Massterpiece Ent. imprint which went on to be nominated for Album of the year for 2008's SAN DIEGO MUSIC AWARDS. In 2009, Mass released a compilation entitled: Young Mass Presents. The Best Of Daygo City which, like it's predecessor, was also nominated for album of the year for 2009's SAN DIEGO MUSIC AWARDS. Mass represents all that used to be Hip-Hop. He is not in the game for the bling and the women, rather for the music and the belief that he could change the whole world with just his voice and a beat machine!
