Max G and The Spots is a supergroup of sorts, comprised of some of the Boston music scene’s finest. Singer-songwriter Max G had been playing solo for a few years while the band developed organically through late night parties and jams. Due to the various influences of the individual members’ previous musical backgrounds and projects, what otherwise would have become a predictably enjoyable pop group became a catchy eclectic fusion of pop, rock, jazz, bebop, and funk. Max G grew up emulating lyrically heavy singer-songwriters such as BOB DYLAN and NEIL YOUNG until he discovered clever, off-kilter funk from bands like CAKE, quirky neo-retro rock from FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE, and raucous rock from bands like THE WHITE STRIPES. Lead guitar player Lance Vallis, already highly revered in the area for his involvement with local hip-hop heroes SAVIN ILL, brought an enviably technical prowess of jazz guitar and years of experience playing hip-hop—two unique assets, especially when found in the same person. Having spent years in Pittsburgh’s blue collar dives banging out blues and roots-rock, bassist Steve Breman, long-time member of SHINER JONES, lives at the tail end of the beat laying down his raw, signature grooves. Drummer Shawn Leonard, from parts unknown, a long-time member of THE CAMPFIRE ORCHESTRA, grew up listening to seventies disco and eighties metal. His style leans heavily toward the deep pockets of the jam-band and jazz realm.
