Where to begin? My name is Merrill and music for me began as more of an outlet than anything. I bought my first guitar for myself for Christmas when I was 14 and taught myself using tabs from the internet. I started writing songs as a way to express my emotions because let's face it...if ever there were an angsty teenager, it was definitely me. I never began with hopes in mind for a career in music, but that love has evolved into being exactly what I want to do with my life [like you've never heard that before...] ;) For the first 3 or 4 years I played guitar and wrote music, I wouldn't let ANYONE listen to me....I would even wait to practice until after my father went to bed and I would scurry off to the other side of the house where I couldn't be heard. I played my first gig in public in 2007 (which took A LOT of convincing), and it was essentially love at first...uh...note? Since then, and since going to college, I have been performing whenever and wherever I can. I organize open mic nights on my campus and have had the occasional paying gig around upstate NY, which is always nice. While now a music career is in the forefront of my mind and I am willing to go after it with everything I've got, I still haven't lost sight of what I started with: expression of my own thoughts and emotions. I think that so many mainstream artists lack that aspect to their music, and we as independent musicians need to try and revive that passion that so many like myself put into our music. I am now playing the piano and the ukulele as well and am constantly looking for more ways to put my music out there in hopes that someone can benefit from the words and music I have written. I couldn't imagine my life without music, and that's often the very thing that keeps me going after the dream.
