They take little bites from traditional roots, jazz and country music, then mix them with modern hipster sensibilities, fashioning a brand of freak-folk that is all their own; they express their passion for life, youth and spontaneity by performing songs which range from the terribly grave, to the outrageously dirty. Milkteeth are a trio of young men who celebrate their diverse cultural and musical backgrounds in a way which undermines convention: they make learned, yet unpretentious music, ever unafraid to bend genre and flirt with even the most taboo subjects. Their technical skills as artists are all equally featured, though – and their varied and extensive repertoire of both original music and traditional covers make them ideal for any sort of concert or event. Their first release, the Chance EP, was recorded by Chochukmo’s Kento Kawamura and mixed by local music veteran Koya Hisakazu, at Mark-1 Studios. The album acts as a retrospective of ten years worth of Joey’s songwriting in various projects, as well as a deft expression of the band’s personal identity: from the raucous and sophomoric “Shea Heights” (penned at seventeen years old), in which Joey slyly comments on his first lover’s skill in bed, to “Edging”, a more mature composition, dealing with the universal theme of a young man’s need for familial support in order to grow into a responsible person. Aside from using the traditional medium of the compact disc, featuring a gold-flecked abstraction of Hong Kong’s skyscrapers burning to the ground, the band are opting for a more progressive, environmentally-friendly form of distribution: a state-of-the-art download card, in which the purchasers use a redemption code to prompt a high-speed download onto their computer. Following a public CD release on October 23rd, the band is planning a tour of Korea, alongside the noted Seoul-based rock band, Used Cassettes. Available for functions and concerts of all kinds
