Biography

Like a pirate transmission from a faraway radio, on a heartbroken planet not unlike this one, the narcotic hymns of a band of space pilgrims reverberate through the atmosphere. Like a pirate transmission from a faraway radio, on a heartbroken planet not unlike this one, the narcotic hymns of a band of space pilgrims reverberate through the atmosphere. Hurtling toward our galaxy, this company of cosmic pioneers call themselves Mount Peru, broadcasting a strange and beautiful message coded in hypnotic strains of post-modern Americana. That message has reached earth, and Mount Peru’s debut album, My Sweetheart the Destroyer (2011), has exploded onto the Boston music scene with the gentle yet insistent force of a slo-mo supernova. Recorded in an old, creaky paper warehouse deep in the urban wilderness of Boston, MA and produced by Eric Masunaga at Modulus Studios (Magnetic Fields, Sebadoh, Dambuilders), each track is a fuss in the sonic dust — sometimes a rodeo, other times a gunfight, and others still a barroom brawl — all recollected in feverish whiskey-soaked dreams by the campfire. In spite of the rattling shopping carts of the nearby supermarket and the disharmonious clanging of the mechanic’s shop below, Mount Peru’s debut effort evokes both grandeur and intimacy. Hailed by the Weekly Dig as “versatile, complete, far-reaching and thoroughly satisfying”, the record includes the Boston Phoenix MP3 of the week for January 5th, 2011: the pop-infused “Summer Jinx” — and was lauded by Timeout Boston for the “heart wrenchingly pleasing effect” of its blend of spacey arrangements with Americana twang. Mount Peru was nominated for ‘Best New Act’ in the Boston’s Phoenix’s Annual Music Poll. Mount Peru will be planning a summer tour in support of their new EP to be released on March 31, 2012 at the Middle East Upstairs in Cambridge, MA. Their 3,000 mile 2011 summer tour, in support of My Sweetheart the Destroyer (2011), reached audiences from New York, NY to Columbia, MO.
