Biography

t’s the way En Vogue freed our minds from the shackles of edgeless, female-fronted R&B. It’s No Doubt entangling us from the spiderwebs of ska. And, just as we began feeling hella good about electro-pop, it’s the way Gwen went bananas while the rest of the pop world stood still, waiting for what’s next - Some artists are simply ahead of the curve. t’s the way En Vogue freed our minds from the shackles of edgeless, female-fronted R&B. It’s No Doubt entangling us from the spiderwebs of ska. And, just as we began feeling hella good about electro-pop, it’s the way Gwen went bananas while the rest of the pop world stood still, waiting for what’s next - Some artists are simply ahead of the curve. On deck in the elite lineup of genre-bending trendsetters is Toronto’s Najuah, the high-energy 6-piece, fronted by sisters Hanifa and Juliet. With equal influence taken from the aforementioned female-fronted trailblazers, Najuah blend crazy beautiful with punk rock sexy and tight vocal harmonies that only siblings can share. But it’s the diversity in their taken from personal influences and past musical projects which is Najuah’s calling card; moving from crunching guitars and post-punk synth in one jam to grooved out bass lines and diva’ed vocal stylings in the next - it's simply the way Najuah rolls. As rare as it is, Najuah have managed to casually juggle attention from both the indie and mainstream music critics. Not only have they landed major love from key Canadian media outlets (MuchMusic, MTV Canada, TLN Television, as well as the Canadian Music Network), they’ve seamlessly infiltrated the Toronto indie scene with a fresh sound that is welcome and refreshing to both sides of the generally divided musical landscape; infamous internet enigma and EYE Weekly critic Lonely Vagabond is merely one of the champions of Najuah’s infectious presence in the independent Canadian music scene: “Impeccable RnB grooves fused with rock energy, complete with impeccable harmonies and a dynamic riff-ridden sound. Excellent stage presence and charisma, old and new collide for a sound that's modern and contemporary.” An act that spans multiple genres, and wins the acclaim of critics of all disciplines and tastes, Najuah is standing on the edge of something unseen in recent music trends, and building the most enthusiastic of fanbases along the way. With Toronto confidently on lockdown and an EP in the works, Najuah sees no boundaries for 2009; they promise to be breaking ground and making waves, causing melodic disturbances in your headphones and in your hometown - no matter where that may be.
