Night’s Bright Colors was stated in 2002 by Asheville, NC-based musicians Jason Smith and Matthew Mauney. After establishing a “revolving door” of musicians and collaborators, the two began recording and assembling several albums worth of material for private distribution over the next few years. Night’s Bright Colors was stated in 2002 by Asheville, NC-based musicians Jason Smith and Matthew Mauney. After establishing a “revolving door” of musicians and collaborators, the two began recording and assembling several albums worth of material for private distribution over the next few years. With the addition of permanent members James Richards (bass, guitar, vocals) and Maria Potapov (violin), Night’s Bright Colors became a more viable live entity and began playing shows in the WNC area. The debut album, “Love in the Asylum” was released in 2006 and begins ‘The Hospital Quartet’, a series of 4 interrelated albums revolving around two fictional patients in a mental hospital. The second disc, “First Set Fire to the Stars” followed in 2008, with “Late night by Lamplight” in 2009. The fourth and final disc in the series, “Patient Notes”, is scheduled to be released Feb, 2010. NBC has also contributed songs and incidental music to several feature films.
