Fresno borne Olivia May began her musical journey at a very young age, showing off her unusually advanced ‘pipes’ as early as kindergarten. After starring as the lead in numerous school plays and performing as a soloist in choir, she was invited to be the lead singer of the alternative-rock band, Vuja De. They signed with manager Phil Robinson (Management Inc./Island Def Jam) and subsequently traveled back and forth between New York and Los Angeles performing, recording and showcasing for other companies such as Bad Boy, Sony and Interscope. From the buzz earned in their travels, they were tabbed to open for Shane West’s band, Jonny Was, at The Roxy during the summer of 2002. However, when Avril Lavigne’s career took off, all interest was lost in Vuja De. Olivia subsequently quit the band, moved back home to Fresno, and returned to high school to earn her diploma. Upon graduating high school, a musically disillusioned Olivia had to put her singing career on the back-burner in order to financially support herself by taking an entry-level position at Starbucks Coffee Co. At 21, after three years of relentless toil, Olivia’s creative juices began to flow uncontrollably, prompting her to quit her job and return to Los Angeles for a go at some unfinished business. Upon her return, she felt it imperative to learn an instrument in order to expand her range stylistically; she picked up a guitar and has never looked back.
