Welcome to Ovid Stevens' Artist Biography! Welcome to Ovid Stevens' Artist Biography! I had piano lessons at age eight, got a Silvertone acoustic guitar (still have it, framed and on my wall) for Christmas at age twelve and that was the start of it. I got home from school one afternoon and there was a guy lying on our sofa. His boots were off and his feet were hanging off the end of the sofa, he was asleep. His name was "King" David Tate, from east Texas. King David was a musician friend of my father. David was a wild and woolly kind of musician type who played acoustic guitar (Martin D-18) and sang, sounded like Hank Williams senior. In fact, "King" David's claim to fame, other than performing in every honky tonk in the U.S. and overseas (in the service) was that he and Hank Williams were put in jail for pissing behind a tonk in Nashville, TN. According to "King" David, they played and sang the night away in that cell. Anyway, at this point David started teaching me chords on the guitar. Got an electric guitar (Fender Broadcaster - wish I still had that) and that's how this whole thing got started! In the 60's I put together a group called Theze Few. After a few local records, Theze Few signed with Hip: Stax/Volt - Memphis, TN in 1968 and changed the name of the combo to Southwest FOB. We had a couple of medium hits (according to Billboard Magazine) called The Smell of Incense (reached 56 on Billboard, 54 on Cashbox & 48 on Record World Charts 1968) and Feelin' Groovy which was the last single released under the Hip label on November 20, 1969 before the subsidiary label was dissolved. Now, for a glimpse of my Professional Musical career to date: I was a member of these next groups: Randy Meisner (bass guitar) Juniper (lead and slide guitar) Southern Rock Legends (lead and slide guitar) Hamilton, Stevens and Mix (producer, arranger, vocals, lead and slide guitar) Seals and Crofts (lead and slide guitar) England Dan and John Ford Coley (lead and slide guitar) The following is a list of groups and artists that I have been fortunate enough to have worked or toured with: Bread Elton John Led Zeppelin (Southwest FOB opened for their first American tour 1969) Paul Revere and the Raiders Eagles Molly Hatchett The New Kings Glen Campbell Laura Branigan Belinda Carlilse Captain and Tennille Vanilla Fudge Lynyrd Skynyrd Blackfoot Larry Carlton Chicago Neil Sedaka Jeff Porcoro Mike Porcoro Jack Lenz David Paich Steve Lukather Tribal Tongue Stet Howland (member of Wasp; currently with Leta Ford in NY) Boyd Williams The Osmonds Toto Alice Cooper Stevie Ray Vaughn Jimmy Griffin The Platters Percy Sledge Etta James Television Productions or Events that I have appeared in: California Jam, Seals and Crofts (April 6, 1974) American Bandstand (1976 and 1977) The Tonight Show staring Johnny Carson (1976 and 1977) Mike Douglas (1976, 1977, 1978 and 1979) Merv Griffin (1976, 1977 and 1978) Don Kirshner's Rock Concert (1976) Midnight Special/Wolfman Jack (1976 and 1977) Glen Campbell Special (London) Dinah! (1976, 1977, 1978 and 1979)> The Captain and Tennille Show (1977) Lynn Anderson Special (1977) Tony Orlando and Dawn (1977) James at Fifteen (TV sitcom - 20th Century Fox) (1979) Ol Grey Whistle Stop (London) The Larry Kane Show (1968) Phil Donahue Show I also wrote the song "Mousekemania" used on the album "Splashdance" released under the Disneyland © label in 1983 by Disney Music Productions. "A few more things I'm sure, just can't remember right now..., the 60's ya know." I had taken a long break from performing professionally full-time, but the music never stopped...it's in my bones! I have been performing off and on now since 2005 in Fort Myers Beach, Florida with Tribal Tongue, The New Kings and as a Featured Guest Artist with various bands. I've been back in his studio for a while now working on the first solo CD of my own music. Got together with a couple of great friends and we are collaborating on putting together a new show. Currently rehearsing for the show, working on a couple of new projects with some other friends out of Dallas and Austin as well as continually recording and tweaking the music for my CD. In the meantime, bookmark this page and keep checking back to get the latest info on what I'll be up to next, the progress on my CD release and the appearance schedule of the new show.
