Painting With Ella is a three-piece Edmonton-based acoustic folk group that was formed in February of 2008, made up of Emily Guthrie, Robyn Newman-Wilson, and Jaclyn Turville. Their music incorporates many different styles including elements of Jazz and Folk, and they are constantly inspired by each other as well as a variety of other artists, such as Regina Spektor, The Beatles, Dala, Lhasa, Joanna Newsom, Joni Mitchell and Jenny Lewis. Their vocal harmony emphasis and their less-is-more musicality are their signature elements. Their close friendship, which developed during their years in the Junior High and High School programs at Victoria School of the Arts, has brought them even closer as musicians and has allowed them to create a sound unique to their group. All of their songs are original compositions, and each member is a recognized songwriter. These last two years, the band has had the opportunity to compete in the Calgary Folk Music Festival Songwriting Competition, winning 3rd Place for "San Francisco" in 2009, and a Judges Discretionary Prize for "Carnivale", Best Performance for "Last Remark", and 1st Place for "Daughters" in 2010. Their 2010 win included the priviledge of playing their winning song at the "And the Winners Are..." workshop at the 2010 Calgary Folk Music Festival. While in Calgary, the band was invited to record three songs in-studio at Rawlco Radio's Mix 97.7. Other radio highlights include the airplay of "Daughters" during a U22 feature on CBC's The Key of A, in April 2010. Painting With Ella have had the pleasure of playing at both the Winspear Centre for Music, as well as the Jubilee Auditorium, both prestigious Edmonton Arts venues. They have also played many local festivals, such as The Works Art and Design Festival, NextFest, Heart of the City Arts Festival, Kaleidoscope Family Arts Festival, Homefest, and the Deep Freeze Festival. In September 2010, the band recieved a generous grant from the Edmonton Arts Council, and are now in the process of recording their first full-length studio album, to be released summer 2011, at Crowtown Studios in Edmonton, where they also recorded their EP, Whisper the Wills, in 2009. Painting With Ella is a recently confirmed act at the 2011 Calgary Folk Music Festival; they will be playing their own concert as well as participating in various workshops throughout the weekend.
