Paul Daniel is a powerful singer/songwriter and guitarist from Raleigh, North Carolina. Paul thrives on the raw purity of one man and one instrument, yet is always pushing for an even fuller folk rock sound. His guitar work is layered and complex drawing influences from, rock, blues, country, bluegrass and folk. Imagine Bruce Springsteen, Mark Knopfler, Norman Blake and Jerry Garcia all channeled into one guitar. The result is a rich foundation for songs with vivid scenes, lingering stories and unforgettable lyrics. The hallmark of Paul’s songs is a rich, baritone voice that spins humorous tales of love gone wrong in songs like “Telling the Truth” and introspective, confessional outbursts in songs like “Fine Line” and “Lonely.” Always honest and incisive, Paul puts his heart on display, but isn’t afraid to call it the way he sees it. Paul’s work hasn’t’ gone unnoticed. The Independent Weekly included Paul in their “Music Worth Leaving the House For” section, noting "Raleigh's Paul Daniel focuses on the punch of the desolate, echoing the world-weary Springsteen or, better yet, a less-scruffy Pete Yorn.” And “Telling the Truth” was a Quarter Finalist in the Acoustic Channel on OurStage.com for August 2007 after starting at #464. Paul grew up surrounded by music. His father was a legendary disc jockey in New York City and at an early age, Paul was going to concerts, creating homemade radio shows and learning as much about the music he heard as he possibly could. The result is a list of influences that puts Bill Monroe, Eric Clapton, John Prine, Howlin’ Wolf, Nanci Griffith, Greg Brown, Radiohead, Sugar and the Black Crowes on the same shelf. You’ll hear ghosts of these artists in Paul’s songs, but the final sound is uniquely his own. In 2007, Paul released an EP, “Shine in Use,” that shows off a versatile folk rock sound and lyrics that move between the plaintive, the tender and the sarcastic.
