Pawns and Kings is a band defined by lyrics, instrumentation, and philosophy. Their sound is very reminiscent of Mumford and Sons, The Avett Brothers, Matthew and the Atlas, and the Middle East. They are highly influenced by the New Folk scene as well as spiritual acoustic. Their debut album "Letters to Lucy" is a musical journey through the life of the lead singer Ed Stengel. He is a huge fan of writer such as CS Lewis, JRR Tolkien, GK Chesterton, CK Spurgeron, and John Eldridge. He and Ben (the guitarist and producer) where once part of a progressive rock outfit called the Race to Olvido where fiction was the focus as the music followed a novel Ed was writing. This form of expression dried out for him though, as he became frustrated in not being able to fully express the thoughts that were plaguing him. When he heard breakout stars City and Colour and Mumford and Sons he found that they had discovered the perfect venue in which to vent philosophical laments. He and Ben then began to study the new folk scene and started to write their own music using guitar, piano, and banjo. Harmonies and emotion is still a huge part of their music now. Their debut released will be out in December 2011.
