By Jody Georgianna Shallow Like Me (SLM) is one of our rising local bands who deserves recognition from the local Porterville community and beyond. Their sound is majestic. For only being together a short time, they have something special. Not only do they share the same dream of making it big, have a vigorously collaborative sound, but they share something more important: a family bond. The three original members were old friends. Shane Scheer is one of the two guitar players, and he feels confident recording and showing off his pink guitar. When asked about the color, he replied, “It caught your attention, didn’t it?” The other guitar player is Chris Silas, a funny and charismatic addition to the band. Bassist Patrick Herrera cannot go a day without his eyes on the prize; fame. In the beginning, they had a drummer who was named Nicholas Florez. Soon after that, the search was on for the fifth piece of the puzzle: a singer. Obviously, three guitarists and a drummer do not make a band. They searched through a few different singers before they found their "messiah.” His name is Tommy Hayden, and his voice will make you quiver. At that time, the band was unnamed, but they were ready to take a leap of faith and step into this world of music, which solely depended on the “right mix.” After recording their first two tracks, “Casterous,” and “Are You Gonna Finish That,” they soon found out the mix was not right, and their drummer left. I inquired what happened next and vocalist Tommy replied, “Not even a week after we tried out our first new drummer "Sam,” he stuck like family from day one, so we decided to stick with him.” The piece was a match to the puzzle; they could all finally see the picture. Samuel Diamant was their new drummer; he came in early December 2010. Thus, Shallow Like Me was born. Shallow Like Me records at two different studios, Scenix Science and GorillaHouse. They are sponsored by Visalia Signs, Volition Clothing, and Jeff’s Music. These five places made the right decision in getting involved with SLM. Jan. 28 through 30, SLM was in Dinuba recording with Scenix Science. They have release two more tracks. One called “Memory Stains,” and the other called “God Made Me Do It.” Also other various recording was done that weekend. Why is Shallow Like Me so special? Well, there is a certain knot that forms in the stomach when one steps off of a high diving board, or get to the top of a roller coaster. There is a certain anticipation that builds when someone is climbing a mountain to see the view, or waiting for an acceptance letter. There is a certain wave of emotion when one watches the sun rise, when thunder cracks, or when it is so quiet, ears ring. That is the sound of Shallow Like Me. Their music is indescribable; the sound is flawless. To understand the euphoric nature, one would have to listen to this music. Not only is their sound unalterable and exclusive, their lyrics are unique and can apply to anyone’s life to some degree. Their music reaches everyone, which is not easy for a rising band to accomplish. Yet somehow, SLM has captivated hundreds. Shallow Like Me has their videos on Youtube, and have a Facebook page. Listen to their music; hear for yourself what an amazing band they are, not only to the Porterville community, but to the musical world.
