Shei entered the arena of predominately male bands after the visionary Latrisha Redmon held a successful event entitled, "Girls Can Play Drums, Too" in October of 2008. It was a two day drum clinic that taught as well as showcased the talents of females of all ages and with varying talents. After climaxing with a phenomenal concert featuring singers, musicians, poets and rappers, it was such a huge success until that event gave Latrisha an idea which then turned to a vision. Latrisha was given a vision to pull from those talented women to start up an all female band. The band was originally named Redemptive Soul but was later changed to Shei (pronounced She) in order to have a more distinct presence in the music arena. By changing their name to Shei, it would automatically allow others to recognize them as an all female band. The intent was to broaden their performing platform throughout the world and not to just center on local venues or to a select group of people. The members of Shei, formally known as Redemptive Soul are: Latrisha Redmon (drums), Shaundrin Elliot (keyboard), Kimberlye McKinney (saxophone), Jessica Givhan (vocals), Jasmine MaGaha (vocals), and Karmen Jones (bass). Crystal Howard and Pandora Hullett, two of the original members who are no longer apart of the Shei phenomena have decided to venture off in pursuits of more personal passions in other arenas, but they will always be a valuable part of Shei’s DNA. The band of uniquely talented women you see today is Shei and as we say, the rest is her-story. Shei has been privileged to share the same stage with the likes of PJ Morton and his band. They were the house band for The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute's, African American Leading Ladies Gala and Award Show. Also, Shei was the house band for the Leading Edge Institute's Award Show for up and coming young leading ladies of tomorrow. They were also the house band for a book signing hosted by National Recording Artist/Author/Preacher, L. Spenser Smith. Shei has also been privileged to be the backup band for recording artist Leon Timbo out of Atlanta, Georgia who recently signed with Babyface’s record label. Shei has also been the backup band for Chantae Cann of Atlanta, Georgia who was the backup singer for India Arie and is now a solo artist that is vastly making a name for herself with quite a national following. Shei is also the house band for the monthly event coined as Birmingham Jams. Latrisha Redmon, the founder and drummer of Shei is also the CEO of Fee-nomenal Music, LLC and hosts the monthly event that is currently being held at the Plum Bar in downtown Birmingham. Shei has played for many private events in and out the city of Birmingham, Alabama and continues to impact many with their unique sound and approach in the art of music.
