Shelter was formed in early 2006 by Charlie Griggs, Scott Hulsey, and Brandon Holcomb. Combining their disparate influences, from The Beatles to Sevendust to Tool, they created Shelter as a musical experiment unrestricted by boundaries of genre or style; a place they could escape from the world to, where each idea was given equal merit. Scott coined the name after this sentiment; Shelter quickly became a literal refuge for the three against the ‘normal’ world, a place where everyone was allowed to express themselves freely without fear of judgement. After Brandon’s departure to another state later that year, Charlie and Scott spent the following months honing their craft alone and collaborating. The brunt of the songs of “Something Gone” come from these critical months. The duo enlisted the help of drummer Patrick Naven and, after recruiting all-around musician Ian McQueen on bass, began playing shows throughout the remainder of the year. This incarnation of the band placed well at several battle-of-the-bands and enjoyed a modest following. After Ian left to pursue solo musical interests, the band managed to recruit Charlie’s childhood friend Mike Vallejo on bass. Patrick left to begin a family, and so the trio held a drummer audition onstage at a local club, where Jason McKinney showed up to blow them away with his abilities. With this rhythm section in place, the band found its current lineup and soon became a favorite at Just One More, the club where Jason auditioned, as well as several other local venues. “Something Gone”, the band’s debut album, features 11 anthems blending angst and agression with interweaved layers of melody. From the crushing intensity of tracks like the title track and ‘Mired Down’ to the more introspective moments of ‘The Lepers’ and ‘Confusion’ to the hard rock/pop songcraft of ‘Sorrow’ or ‘Blinders’, this album will appeal to fans of rock music all the way across the board.
