A sidereal (pronounced sigh-dear’-real) day refers to the rotation of the Earth measured relative to the stars. A sidereal (pronounced sigh-dear’-real) day refers to the rotation of the Earth measured relative to the stars. It is the time it takes the Earth to rotate 360 degrees and is equal to 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds. The name fits, because Sidereal Day is not just any good ol’ rock and roll band. With Dennis Simoneau and Steve Eaton on guitars and vocals, Jim Myhaver on bass, Pat Raymond keyboard, and Kurt Johnson on drums, Sidereal Day presents us not only with new, classic-style rock that’s great for shakin’ your tail-feathers, but each of these five men have come full circle in their lives as professional musicians. And they made it around a little differently than most. Originally named Still Standin’, they started out as a cover band, playing everyone’s favorite songs at local shows all over Southern Maine. They spent time writing at rehearsals, and even recorded a 5-song demo, but stuck to the program for the most part at live performances. They were encouraged by feedback they got from the demo, and they started fleshing out the set with an original here and there, realizing that it wasn’t necessary to play it safe anymore. The music that Sidereal Day writes fits in with the standards so well, it was time to flip a switch. Increasing the number of originals included in their set, making a name and line-up change, and suffering the tragic loss of a member, Sidereal Day has continued to grow and strengthen as a force in original local music. With strong vocal harmonies, tasteful solos, and lyrics that everyone can relate to, Sidereal Day had only just begun to rock. The boys went into the studio, re-recorded their demo, added five more songs, and released their first full-length CD, “Once Around”. The CD had a great response locally, and they have sold over six hundred copies without any fancy promoters or labels – just pushing the merch at their shows, like any other hardworking rock band in Maine. They just released their second CD, “Four Minutes Shy”, in July, and both are available through links on their Myspace page and website. Sidereal Day has musical history, tenure, and soul. All of which are hard to find anywhere in today’s music scene, regardless of genre. The marvel is that these guys work full time jobs, raise families, and still manage to rock our socks off up to four times a month, rehearsing regularly, and recording another full-length CD in the mix! The third release should be ready in late 2008, so keep checking the website, or join their email update list. No more rusty van tours on the open road, starving, and bangin’ sketchy “groupies” for Sidereal Day. They’ve all been there, done that. Now they’re ready to blaze a trail in the New England music scene that will show any screamcore-emo-crybaby band just who their daddy really is…
