Soda Pop Cherries is an alternative rock band in the styles of The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, and Radiohead. Formed in Los Angeles, 2010, the band consists of lead vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist, Anthony Shea and drummer, Sam Talerico. The two met while attending Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, California.
For two years, Anthony Shea was writing and performing piano pop as a solo artist. He played around local bars, coffee-shops, college events, hip-hop showcases; really anything he could get his hand on. He soon grew tired of writing solely on one instrument, and became interested in “heavier”, guitar based music. In early 2010, he began composing completely new material, as well as looking for other members to form a band.
Anthony started practicing with Canadian drummer, Brandon Hopkins. Anthony and Brandon practiced hours upon hours, playing and recording together under an unnamed project. While Anthony and Brandon practiced late night at their music school, students would often gather and peek in the practice room, and sometimes come in a sing one of the bands songs.
Jesse Wall, a former MI music business student took interest in the group, and immediately became their manager.
However , just as things we’re looking up for Anthony and Brandon, financial crisis hit Brandon due to an unapproved college loan. Brandon had two weeks before he had to move back to his hometown in Newfoundland, Canada.
Anthony and Brandon had to part ways. While Brandon became involved in other bands and other genre’s, Anthony stayed focused on completing his alternative rock band he dreamed of. Jesse’s belief in the project wasn’t shaken, and him and Anthony began searching for new members.
Anthony became friends with his new neighbor, Sam Talerico. Sam had moved from Des Moines, Iowa to pursue his dream as a professional drummer. Sam was dealing with a band-breakup himself. Anthony was surprised to find this out, because Sam was disabled and drummed in a wheelchair. Sam was very interested in Anthony’s band idea, and joined forces with him.
The band’s first gig was a battle of the bands in Las Vegas, Nevada. The band performed under the recently decided name, “Soda Pop Cherries”. The band put a hassle on the sound crew, as they were the only band to perform with backing tracks. After a few more awkward gigs, the band decided to focus on completing their debut EP.
The member’s have been recording in Santa Monica at the Art Institue’s recording studio. Producer, Uros Strnad, and recording engineer, Darren Lodwick have been present at the sessions.
