Though no stranger to the world of music and rap; Tacoma native, Derrick Benn, is just now coming into being a Gospel Artist. "It truly is an honor to represent and promote Jesus Christ!" He understands that this is more than music, but very much so ministry as well. D.B., has shared the stage with many talented artist and a few big names, but want’s the people to know that this mission is far more greater than a stage and/or being seen. With that said, this ambassador has put all trust and faith in Jesus, to such a work he‘s been called to do. So, if that means creating music that witnesses and enlightens the people; especially a dying hip hop/pop generation, Derrick Benn say’s he’s all for it. The now Gospel Artist, expresses that people are tired and want be relieved or revived from all of the negativity in music. “If you ever noticed, there is no substance in secular music. This is why Gospel Music is necessary, because the message inside of the music give’s people hope.” Derrick has released a pre-album entitled, “Got Salvation?”, in august of 2008. It displayed his sincerity, passion, and willingness towards God. The project also gave us a preview of what is to come from this gifted child of God. Derrick Benn is currently working on his full length cd, “A Breathe of Life,” which is not yet scheduled for release but is very much so anticipated in his hometown, Tacoma. The mix-tape’s, collaborations, albums, DVD’s, it’s is all coming, so get ready for this Kingdom Kid who isn’t turning back for nothing! The rapping child of God, just recently turned his life and music over this year in 2008. His mother would always encourage him to give his life back to God and turn his music over also. D.B., never cared for Gospel Rap. He enjoyed hip hop music that was from the streets, because that is what he seen growing up and could relate. Raised in a Christian based family, from his great grand’s on down to his mother and deceased father, who was a man of God himself, D.B., had knowledge of Jesus. He struggled with his faith all while growing up. Derrick Benn was entangle between the streets, sports and his faith in Jesus Christ. This young man knew there was a calling on his life, but was not ready to stand up to it. The now married, father of two, say’s he was haunted and heavily burdened by his reckless lifestyle and knew he needed to change not only for himself but his children’s sake. “They needed me to teach and train them up the way they should go, just like I was, if not more effectively,” say’s Derrick B. Like he mentions in the song entitled, "Give Him Your All," (This is my big pay back/to you (Jesus) I owe it all/We all come short & fall/But you, work it out/You, work it out/My Lord, my Lord/), that is what he’s doing, giving God his all; in his music and in everyday life. This Kingdom Kid says that the Lord began to show him the need to speak life to and into the people, while he was in the secular realm of hip hop. He and his group were nearly finished with a cd that was receiving much anticipation all over the west coast, “But, God stepped in, and I feel much better than I ever have in my life,” he say’s. D.B., has a strong passion for music and with out a doubt, his music speaks for itself; but he note’s, “My passion to serve God and his people is much grater than anything else.” His message, THE CROSS, and his vision is to make the people aware of the power of words along with the liberty that is in Jesus Christ. "(Only by grace through faith we are saved). In my humility, I will lift up my Savior, all my days. If the words and message in my music are not encouraging folks; or even just one soul to turn to CHRIST, then this is all in vain.” Church Home- Edwards Temple C.O.G.I.C./Pastor Joseph C. Edwards
