INDIE LABLE: SUPER ENTERTAINMENT RECORDINGS ARTIST: SUPERSTAR"THE CHAMP" How do stars survive? According to NASA, “the essence of the star's life story is the ongoing competition between two forces: gravity and pressure. The force of gravity tries to make a star collapse, while internal pressure tries to force the star to expand. When these two forces balance, the star is stable…” There is probably no one who personifies this theory more than Stacy “Superstar” Blackwell, the charismatic, pizzazz-infested centerpiece of the multifaceted Super Entertainment Recordings family. SUPERSTAR has long dealt with the gravity of a steady stream of naysayers praying for his downfall, but his own feverish drive to prove them all wrong has kept him from imploding and continues to push his expansion into a Hip-Hop powerhouse. The first person to try to take SUPERSTAR out of the game was the very person who brought him into the world. “Oh, Moms straight hated rap music,” he remembers with a chuckle. “She thought it was the worst thing on Earth, it was absolutely disgusting and that I’d never be successful with it.” While he respected Mom Dukes’ opinion, her cynicism was drowned out by the cheers of the ever-increasing group of friends a 12-year-old SUPERSTAR was earning through daily freestyle sessions before, during and after class at Atlanta’s Salem Middle School. Since he couldn’t listen to rap at home SUPERSTAR had to listen to whatever his friends were into at school, and his early rhymes were inspired by the hottest acts of that time including 2Pac, Master P and Too $hort. By the time he hit High School SUPERSTAR’s rep as a lyricist and entertainer was already solidified, and he scored his first recording contract at age 17. Though extremely short-lived, this initial deal showed him exactly how he did not want his career handled and prompted him to take a more entrepreneurial approach to the biz. He aligned with some friends to form Dynasty Music, and though the imprint’s success peaked with only one song breaking through to radio, the connections and experience earned would prove invaluable. Dynasty’s death signaled the birth of Super Entertainment as SUPERSTAR and another of Dynasty’s co-founders, Will Merriman, took what they’d learned and launched a new imprint that would embody the business values they both believed in. Many would’ve collapsed under the weightiness of consecutive failed endeavors. Instead, SUPERSTAR, in a true showing of stellar stability, put pressure on himself to transform those missteps into stepping stones that would make him rise higher and shine brighter than he ever had. Today, SUPERSTAR is one of the most promising indie acts in Hip-Hop, characterized by a sound that disproves the notion that commercial music can’t be dope, a work ethic that would exhaust an Energizer, and an inimitable, collage-inspired style that’s one-of-a-kind to say the least. Super Entertainment is plotting an industry takeover with SUPERSTAR at the helm, canvassing the nation to spread good music to the masses. And the haters can’t stand it. They’re louder and more negative than ever, but they have no idea that there’s not enough gravity on Earth to crush a SUPERSTAR. He’ll just keep expanding ‘til he blows into a supernova so bright that you can’t help but to acknowledge it. The Champ is here, and he’s shining.
