Keeps You Up When You’re Down (KYUWYD) signaled a transition period for The Perms. After the band spent over two years touring and promoting their 2005 release “Better Days”, they began writing material for their fourth studio album and soon realized an evident shift in their overall sound. The songs were more aggressive and harder edged, a definite shift from the lighter, melodic pop sound on their previous recordings. The band began to recognize they could do more with less, so they parted ways with their horn section and moved their lineup down to a three piece. This forced the band to connect with eachother on a whole different level. Their new vision was simple, “write a straight ahead rock record that captures the energy and hooks that make this band unique”. This “no-bullshit” approach to songwriting produced the band with thirty fresh tracks before they headed into Unison Studios in Winnipeg to start the recording process for KYUWYD. In the studio, The Perms enlisted the help of Phil Deschambault (EMI, Ash Koley) to produce and track the album. His approach to recording helped establish a creative atmosphere where every idea had a voice and working for “the song” was most important. All egos were left at the door. The Perms spent several months locked away in the studio working towards making this album strong from start to finish. This group writes albums, not singles. On April 4, 2010, The Perms released their fourth full-length CD “Keeps You Up When You’re Down”. This 12-track recording showcases the group’s ability to write stick-in-your head songs that effectively transfer over to the group’s energetic live performances.
