Raised in the grim streets of South Jamaica Queens, Tonye Charles is a multi-talented individual who grew up trying to find his place in life. Growing up in a diverse neighborhood, he was a child with imagination and always knew he would make a dent in the world with his dreams. Tonye developed the passion to create at a very young age. From drawing and writing stories to conceptualizing events for him and friends, he always had ideas. At the age of 9 after the separation of his parents, Tonye was introduced to someone who changed his life forever. With his mother moving on with her life, she met someone who had a son who was a hip hop artist. Growing up with 3 sisters, Tonye found someone who can fill the void of being an older brother. He admired everything about him; from his style of dressing to his love of music. As his passion for the craft developed, he began branching out on his own, writing his first verse at the age of 10. After his mother purchased a home in the south side of queens, Tonye was introduced to a life style that would force him to lose his way and jeopardize his future career goals. Later at the age of 19, he was convicted of an assault charge and served time in prison. Feeling that the world was moving while his life was at a standstill, Tonye began to analyze his mistakes. Then ironically he began to see the situation as a blessing in disguise. It inspired him to become more driven not only with his career goals, but with life in general. “I learned a lot about myself while in jail. I was lost before. There’s a lot you can learn in the class of life when there’s no bell to end the period but detention taught me the lesson a lot faster.” When Tonye was released from prison, his major focus was on his life and his career. He came up with the name Tone The Tantrum, which has a double meaning: 1. Tone, which is short for his first name, a composed individual; and Tantrum which showcases his aggressive side musically. 2. “Tone The Tantrum”, a phrase that describes his style, distinction and elegance within his musical presence. The word Tone itself, being defined as a particular style or manner (as of writing, speech or mood) describes precisely the versatility in his music (a variation of energy, presence and genres from song to song). Feeling that the majority of the game is lacking appreciation in lyricists, Tone The Tantrum describes his music with one word: substance. His sound is universal, moving everyone who comes in contact with it. Some of his biggest influences were DMX, Nas, Eminem, and Lupe Fiasco. At the age of 25, he is still following his dreams and will not stop until they become his reality. “I feel as if I’ve been sent on a mission; and failing is not an option.”
