Despite the struggles in his life, Jabril “Yung Ril” Stuckey has not given up but uses them as motivation through his lyrics. Yung Ril is an artist from Stockton, CA, born in 1991. Him and his family uprooted from California to the state of Louisiana where he found his passion for music, mostly influenced by the album “Get It How You Live” by the Hot Boyz. At the age of 8, he started recording his own music from a tape recorder and a boom box given by his father. In third grade, Yung Ril performed at his elementary school’s annual talent show only to take third place, a couple months passed and he found out that his mother developed cancer so he took a break from making music. Over the next few months, he watched his mother slowly suffer from this disease that weakened her every day. After his mother’s death in 2002, he and his family moved back to Stockton where he found a new passion, deejaying, which was influenced by his father. At a young age, Yung Ril was making money deejaying at local neighborhood parties. As soon as junior high hit, he picked up the mic again and never put it down. He freestyled at every recess battle and never lost one, from there he started gaining recognition from his peers and the older kids. Beginning his freshman year in high school, he formed a group with his close friends called, “The Big Face Boyz” which consisted of three other boys his age, Ricky D. Williams, Steven “Orange Juice” Russell Jr., and Christian “S.P.Y.D.A.” Bunton. Although they were all busy with school work and extracurricular activities, they still managed to put out three CD’s and homemade music videos with Orange Juice’s camera to gain recognition in their city of Stockton. Yung Ril moved to the Bay during his last two years of high school where he put out his very first mixtape, “I’m Only 17” hosted by Elmo The DJ. From his first mix tape, Yung Ril gained recognition from all parts of the bay including, San Lorenzo, San Leandro and Oakland, where he was featured on KMEL, one of the Bay Area’s most known hip-hop and r & b radio station. Because of the gang-related activities, Yung Ril barely graduated high school. Only a few short weeks after graduation, Yung Ril received news from Stockton, that his best friend, Christian “S.P.Y.D.A.” Bunton had been killed in a train accident. Filled with mixed emotions, he carried his deceased best friend to the cemetery as a pallbearer, that same night; he was sent to Santa Rita County Jail for suspicion of an armed robbery. While he sat in the cold cell, he wrote a song called, “The Christian Bunton Dedication.” After a few days of being locked up, Yung Ril got released with only one charge. Only a few days later did Yung Ril get back on his feet and from there, Yung Ril and Orange Juice released the “Ril-Juice” mixtape hosted by both of them which has become a success over Northern and Southern California. Although Yung Ril speaks about the streets, he hopes to elevate the rap game with his lyrical talent. Not only is he trying to reach out to the people in his city, but to the world. Yung Ril believes that hip-hop isn’t just about video vixens, drugs, and violence; it’s about bringing knowledge and the understanding of ourselves. Written By Cindy Huynh
