Description
Devastating loss and tragedy that is eventually replaced with Hope that is as irresistible as the tide - This is the message of "After the Flood". The song was written before Hurricane Katrina; the "flood" referred to the uncontrollable flood of tears that follows personal tragedy or the loss of someone you love. The more I sang the words, the more I realized the song spoke to the universal theme of human suffering and the ultimate triumph of transcendent hope in the human heart.
Lyrics
Ebb and flow, tide goes out; A sea of emotion, horizon of doubt. Bitter tears fall like rain, Then comes your sea change of salt and pain. (Refrain) Just now it seems like a never-end, But the tide always comes in again. God, in his mercy, God, in His love Promised a rainbow after the flood! Grains of sand sift and pour, Somehow to find another shore. Your firm foundations falling away, Like sandcastles melting in foam and spray. (Refrain) Dip and soar, seagulls fly; Seems like they echo your plaintive cry. Your lamentations lost on the wind; On you horizon, a ship coming in! (Refrain, and fade)
