Description

Inspired by my days in college at Sam Houston State University, located in Huntsville, Texas, right in the heart of a fertile cowboy haven. Having a large agricultural department, and near Texas A&M, there were certainly many bona fide cowboys, ranchers and some really tough cowgirls, but there was also an abundance of "drugstore" cowboys, as they were known at the time, poseurs and wannabees with big hats, tall boots and small hearts. This was written as a parody of these macho imposters.

Lyrics

Big Hat, Tall Boots, Small Heart Lyrics and Music by George Douglas Lee You strut right in like you own the place, slap your hand down on the bar Just a big, bad, bragging bubba, now who do you think you are? You got a shiny new truck ,and a buckle with your name as big as a sizeable state Your snazzy toys impress little boys, but it’s much too little, too late Big Hat, Tall Boots, Small Heart, the only one you’re foolin’ is your mama Big Hat, Tall Boots, Small Heart, you’re a scared little boy, dressin’ up and puttin’ on Everybody knows you’re married, You don’t need to hide the ring And nobody wants to hear about things you’ve never done or seen You talk real loud, ‘cause you’re so damn proud of what you think you’ve done You’re so impressed, but son, look around - you’re the only one Big Hat, Tall Boots, Small Heart. the only one you’re fooling is your mom Big Hat, Tall Boots, Small Heart, Why don’t you just be who you are instead of putting on? Big Deal, Get Real and check your ego at the door Beating your chest and all the rest, we’ve seen it all before Quit putting on and showing off, grow up and drop the act We know you ain’t no cowboy, you just found the hat You figured out those boots won’t make you taller, that hat won’t make you think Your heart became an empty space with every beer you drink I’m glad you saw the light, my friend, and changed out of that empty suit You’re a better man since you dropped the lie and tried on a little truth Big Hat Tall Boots, Small Heart, you know the words now let me hear you sing Big Hat, Tall Boots, Small Heart, A real man doesn’t have to prove a thing Why ARE you wearin’ that big hat? Is your head cold? You coverin’ up that shiny scalp of yours ?Is it big enough for that ego of yours? You look pretty weird driving around in that big Ford F-150 King cab pick-em-up truck wearing that hat and spittin skoal out the window. Bet you have a tattoo that says “mama”. Slim Whitman got nuthin’ on you pardner. Happy trails, bubba.
