Biography

The Damngivers are an Americana flavored band with good hooks, folky and introspective lyrics who can flat out rock, whisper, jam and induce lasting memories. Their music is familiar, rootsy and comfortable. Lead singer/songwriter Gerry Gomez’s songs reflect his desire to form a more perfect union between his social, personal & political leanings. The package is delivered with a sonic pallet similar to AM-era Wilco, Ryan Adams, Paul Westerberg and Neil Young. Gomez walks the line of a cynic with a romantics' heart, akin to a songwriting Jon Stewart. He pens lines like, "Your mouth doesn't know what your mind oughta." Or, "Sometimes we say stupid things, like ‘I love you‘ ", He can mine his soul and detail heartache with empathy, comment on working class strife, pine about baseball, or object to life's inequalities. He writes of the American experience through murky colored glasses. In addition to guitar, bass and drums, the Damngivers create their own sense of place with embellishments like pedal steel guitar (provided by John Phinney, one of the best pedal steel players this side of Barstow), percussion, and the manically expressive guitar stylings of Mike Salas. In the end, the Damngivers sound has a kinship with AM radio of the ‘70s and the singer/songwriter genre. The Damngivers have just independently released their self-titled 5-song debut, “Damngivers” and they continue playing out in Southern California. The band is also contributing a portion of their on-line sales to support Long Beach area disabled Vets of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Proving, in fact, that they do give a damn.
